David Bernstein has been composer-in-residence at the University of Akron for the past 24 years. He received the bachelor and master of music degrees from Florida State University and a DMA in composition from Indiana University in 1974. His principal teachers were Carlisle Floyd and Juan Orrego-Salas. Bernstein has been commissioned to composer orchestral, choral and chamber works, as well as compositions for ballet, theater, musical theater, video and film productions. He has received four awards from the Ohio Arts Council and grants from the Great Lakes Alliance, Meet the Composer, and the Jerome Foundation. Bernstein has lectured and had performances of his music in the U.S., Canada, South America, and Europe. Publishers of Bernstein's music include G. Schirmer, Ludwig Music, Willis Music, the Acoma Co., Lawson-Gould and Dorn Publications. He is currently Vice-President of the Composers Guild.
