Hale Smith Bio as printed in program notes from a Guild concert on April 2, 1963 "Hale Smith was born in Cleveland, and now lives in New York where he works as an editor for Edward B. Marks Music Corporation. He won bachelor's and master's degrees from The Cleveland Institute of Music, where he studied with Marcel Dick. His music was first heard extensively at Karamu Theatre. Mr. Smith has received a number of distinguished commissions and awards; his "Contours for Orchestra", commissioned by Broadcast Music, Inc., has been performed and recorded by the Louisville Orchestra, with the score published by C.
