Outstanding Alumni Award & Symposium
September 28, 2007 Award Recipient: Suat Hong Goh, Ph.D. 1971
We are proud of the accomplishments of our faculty, alumni, and current students, many of whom have become leaders in polymer research and development in industry and academe. Each year a Department of Polymer Science alumnus is chosen to be recognized and receive the Outstanding Alumni Award and is honored at a symposium during the fall semester featuring a lecture presentation by the awardee along with other alumni.
Suat Hong Goh received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Nanyang University, Singapore, in 1964. He then pursued his graduate study in polymer chemistry at The University of Akron under a Singapore government scholarship. After receiving his M.S. degree in 1966, he joined Nanyang University as a lecturer. He came back to Akron in 1968 to continue his Ph.D. study under Professor Maurice Morton. He re-joined Nanyang University in 1971. He has been with the National University of Singapore since 1980 and is currently a professor in the Department of Chemistry. He was a visiting fellow at the University of Texas at Austin (1980/81), Pennsylvania State University (1987/88) and the University of Southern Mississippi (1992).
Professor Goh’s recent research interests focus on polymer blends, fullerene-end-capped polymers and polymer/carbon nanotubes nanocomposites. He has published 300 research papers, 110 conference papers and 4 book chapters. He also holds two patents. Among the awards he has received include the Singapore National Science Award in 1997, the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Achievement Award in 1998, and the FACS (Federation of Asian Chemical Societies) Citation Award in 2003. He was conferred a degree of Doctor of Science by the National University of Singapore in 1993. He has won eleven National University of Singapore teaching awards.
Professor Goh is married to Tong Hua (Theresa) Yang and their son Lek Ping is an accountant.
