Distance Learning Interest Group Submitted by Pat Antonelli Annual Report June, 2009
DLIG at the annual conference: We sponsored a session called The Role of the Academic Library in Providing Services to Remote Learners presented by Louis Mays & Jody Gray (Southern State Community College). The presented how the Enrollment in asynchronous and synchronous learning systems like Blackboard, Angel, and Wimba provide academic librarians a unique opportunity to reach the distant learner. They demonstrated what is currently being done at Southern State Community College to collaborate with faculty members in the nursing department in the design of online courses. We also staffed an information table to inform people of our Distance Learning group.
DLIG Spring Workshop: We joined forces with the Instruction Interest Group to present Trends & Innovations in Information Literacy and Distance Learning on March 20, 2009. It was held at Ohio Dominican University with three sessions and lunch. The first session was Christina Bonner’s presentation of her library’s course web pages for their core interdisciplinary seminars. The second was Megan Mitchell presenting as chair of the Reference Committee of OhioLINK, demonstrating KnowItNowAcademic. The third presentation was a panel discussion with librarians from different types of libraries discussing library instruction. Pat Antonelli, Amy Fyn, Kathryn Venditti, Steven Kenneally, and Traci Moritz were the panel participants and there was a lively discussion with all the attendees participating.
Our Senior Chair, Pat Antonelli is stepping down to make way for Ms Kristen Kirchgesler to take over as Senior Chair. Ms Christina Bonner will serve as Junior Chair this coming year. Christina has been a contributing member of DLIG for a few years and we welcome her as a co-chair.
