TEDSIG Annual Report
June 2009
Update on business from 2008
The reports on the TEDSIG related sessions at the 2008 ALAO Conference were published in the April 2009 issue (v.26:2) of Technical Services Quarterly. Reports were recorded by Marty Jenkins (Wright State University), Kiffany Francis (Cleveland State), Rita Johnson (Wright State), Deberah England (Wright State), Rocki Strader (Ohio State), and Eve Davis (EBSCO). Rocki Strader collated and edited the reports and submitted them for publication to Technical Services Quarterly.
Annual conference
TEDSIG sponsored a program by Margaret Mauer entitled, “Uncorking the Varietals: Social Tagging, Folksonomies & Controlled Vocabularies” at the 34th Annual ALAO Conference, “Connecting the Campus : Linking Users, Institutions, and Information," held October 24, 2008, at the Roberts Convention Centre in Wilmington, Ohio. TEDSIG met during the conference to discuss ideas for the Spring meeting.
Teddy Award
The first, annual Teddy Award was awarded to Margaret Mauer, Head, Catalog & Metadata at Kent State University Libraries and Media Services. The Teddy Award is given to recognize ALAO member who has made significant contributions to the fields of technical, electronic, and digital services.
Spring workshop
This Spring’s Meeting was very successful. Entitled, "Electronic Serials: Getting Them and Keeping Them,” the meeting was held at Conference Center at OCLC in Dublin, Ohio on Friday, April 24, 2009 from 9:30 am - 4:00 pm. The keynote speaker was Regina Romano Reynolds, ISSN Coordinator, from the Library of Congress who spoke on the topic of “Taming the E-Serials Beast: Challenges and Solutions.” We also convened a panel of Ohio academic librarians who deal with e-serials issues.
*Susan Banoun, Cataloging Unit, Head, in the Serials and Electronic *Resource Dept, University of Cincinnati, “Catch a Tiger by its Tail?: The Challenges of Cataloging Electronic Resources.” *Barbara Dunham, Electronic Resources Librarian, The Ohio State University, “E-Serials Are Like Herding Cats.” *Deberah England, Electronic Resources Librarian, Wright State University, “Welcome to the jungle: E-beasts and the quest to cage them.” *Yuezeng Shen, Head of Cataloging, Cleveland State University, “Electronic serials: Collaborative management across departments.”
A NASIG Continuing Education Committee Grant was applied for and awarded to TEDSIG for additional financial support for the meeting to bring in the keynote speaker. Our total attendance, including the speakers, was 66. Eleven registered specifically as NASIG members, there were two students, 26 were non-members. We received a great deal of positive feedback about the meeting. Special recognition goes to TEDSIG member Cynthia Whitacre that helped with the local arrangements for the meeting and to Kristine Kinzer who recorded the meeting for a report for the "Serials Spoken Here" column in Serials Review.
Election
In April, TEDSIG held an election for co-chair. Two colleagues ran for the position: Kristine Kinzer, Serials Librarian, at Ohio Wesleyan University, and Chris Thornton, Head of Serials at Case Western Reserve University. Chris Thornton was elected by the TEDSIG membership via email voting; he will succeed Rocki Strader as co-chair in June.
Thanks to the out-going co-chair
The 2009-2010 co-chairs would like to express appreciation to Rocki Strader for her dedication and hard work on behalf of TEDSIG this past year. Her organization and tireless communication on all matters TEDSIG over the past year will make our job much easier during the course of this next year.
