CURRICULUM MATERIALS CENTER INTEREST GROUP Submitted by A. Carolyn Sanders and Ann Raney Annual Report 6/22/09
Diane Schrecker, Ashland University, hosted the CMCIG’s Spring Workshop, Realinging the CMC, on May 15, 2009. Twenty-one individuals attended. During the opening session, Dr. Deanna Romano and Diane Schrecker, Ashland University, demonstrated practical classroom applications of Web 2.0 technologies—blogging for reflection and community building, Wiki’s for collaboration, teacher and student using YouTube videos for sharing information, RSS feeds to keep updated, and Lib Guides to assist patrons with information access. http://libguides.ashland.edu/cmcig09 Kathy Yoder, Bowling Green State University, used Lib Guide software for her presentation of new children’s and young adult titles and demonstrated some Lib Guide features. Lou Staffillino and Patty Griffin, Ohio Department of Education, reviewed Governor Ted Strickland’s proposed PreK-12 education plan and its impact on teacher preparation programs. Most of the plan is part of House Bill #1 and must be approved by the legislature. Kevin Stinson, regional sales manager, Delta Education, distributed batteries, light bulbs, and wire and challenged attendees to find multiple ways to complete an electrical circuit to light the bulb. He highlighted two Delta science programs, FOSS kits and science modules that encourage problem solving and promote active learning of science concepts. Jack Helm, regional sales manager, Wright Group McGraw Hill, explained their research-based Everyday Mathematics program. Attendees toured Diane Schrecker’s Ashland University CMC.
During the business meeting, Carolyn Sanders, Central State University, CMCIG co-chair, announced that Sara Bushong, Bowling Green State University, accepted the permanent position as Associate Dean of BGSU’s Jerome Library, and Kathy Yoder, Bowling Green State University, agreed to be Acting Head of BGSU’s Curriculum Resource Center for another year. Kathy is also the CMCIG co-chair for 2009-2010. Kathy plans to explore options for an online Ohio Curriculum Materials Centers’ Directory during her term in office.
Carolyn also acknowledged that Gary Lare, professor emeritus and former head of the Curriculum Resources Center, University of Cincinnati, will be receiving the 2009 Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) Education and Behavioral Sciences Section (EBSS) Distinguished Education and Behavioral Sciences Librarian Award on Saturday, July 11th, at the ALA annual conference. http://www.ala.org/ala/newspresscenter/news/pressreleases2009/february2009/acrlebss.cfm Gary was one of the CMCIG team members that drafted the “Curriculum Materials Center Guidelines” in 1992. http://www.alaoweb.org/igs/cmcig/projects.php He has presented at Spring Workshops and advocates for CMC’s at the state and national level.
The CMCIG will sponsor a session during the annual conference on October 30, 2009. The two preferred proposals are “Reinvigorating the Curriculum Center Collection: A Case Study” and “Redefining the Resource Page: Replacing Static Subject Guides with Dynamic Blogs”.
During ALAO’s 2008 annual conference, the CMCIG sponsored the Peace Resource Center (http://www.wilmington.edu/prc/index.cfm) presentation prepared by Dr. James Boland, the Center’s Director and given by Lee Bowman and Patti Kinsinger, from Wilmington College’s Watson Library. They also shared the 10-minute DVD, Hiroshima Maidens Project: A Triumph for Humanity in the Tragic Aftermath of War, produced by Lauren White, 2007.
Ann Raney prepared the IG table display which included a poster with a CMCIG projects’ timeline and charts summarizing twenty years of CMCIG spring workshops—themes, topics, speakers and locations. Copies of past CMCIG projects -- CMC guidelines (1989-1992) and the CMC directory (1993 edition) and a binder of past workshop flyers and agendas were available for browsing.
