Frequently Asked Questions about the Florida Trip for Alumni

Q) How is this going to work?  Do I have to attend the class?

    A) No-we don't expect you to attend the class.  The undergraduates in the class are doing research projects, and each day we will spend in the field (in the water or in the woods).  Part of each day will be spent in the classroom talking about what we saw that day.  Alumni are invited along on all trips and all lectures-but it will be up to you how you want to participate.  You will have 2 experts on fish and lizards at your disposal to satisfy every curiosity about what you are seeing each day.

Q) Why am I paying more than the undergrads?

    A) The price for undergrads does not include their tuition and fees, which alumni don't have to pay.  Your $1000 donation goes directly to supporting undergraduate research within the Biology department.

Q) Can I bring my kids?

    A) Kids are welcome.  The price is per person-for adults or kids. Depending on their age-kids might be cheaper because some kids fly 1/2 price on Air Tahitinui.

Q) Can I make my own travel arrangements?

    A) Sure.

Q) What are we going to do? Do I have to be in shape?

    A) We will be physically active during the trip, spending much time in the water and hiking.

Q) Where are we staying and what's it like?

    A) We are staying at Criobe.  It is very basic-think 1 step above camping.  If enough Alumni are interested-there is the possibility of higher end housing nearby.

Q) Do I have to know how to dive?

    A) No, but you should be a strong swimmer.  If you want to dive, there will be opportunities to dive.  Since neither instructor is a dive-master, these opportunities will be strictly on your own (we will provide time to do them).

Q) When do I have to pay?

    A) We will need at least some of the money in February.  We need to give the station a deposit, and we want to secure a good flight.
