About the Muehlstein Academy
The University of Akron Muehlstein Academy in Mathematics and Science is an innovative enrichment program designed to fuel the interests of Akron high school students in mathematics and science. Through the academy, young people are introduced to exciting learning opportunities and career possibilities.
Academy activities include workshops, academic support sessions, career seminars, guest speakers, research projects and field trips -- all designed to enhance student enjoyment of and performance in science and mathematics.
The program pairs selected students, particularly young women and students of diverse cultures, with area high school teachers, University students, and professors. Together these teams will refine and implement a research plan throughout the summer months.
Early in the program, the academy will offer a four day long residential program at Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center, during which teams will practice research skills and begin to implement their research plans. During the remainder of the summer, students will work in the field and/or laboratory conducting research with their teams and preparing poster presentations and papers about their projects. Participants will receive a stipend for their participation in the program.
