The Ohio Academy of History is a professional society bringing together teachers, scholars, public historians, and students interested in all fields of history.


Our Mission

The Ohio Academy of History seeks to promote the development and dissemination of historical knowledge among the citizens and students of Ohio. The Academy promotes high standards of historical scholarship and teaching in the state's schools, colleges, and museums.
  Since Spring 2003 the Academy has committed itself to assuming an active role in setting standards for the education of Ohio's high-school history teachers.  Click on 2003-4 Academy President K. Austen Kerr's presidential address to learn more.

 

Report of the Standards Committee

 

The Standards Committee evaluates the maintenance and development of sound academic standards for the teaching of history in Ohio schools.  In response to Dr. Kerr's call to the Academy above, the Standards Committee has issued the following report for consideration by the Academy's members.  Click on this link to download it.  (in pdf format.  You will need Adobe Acrobat reader.  See below.)

 


Membership and Activities

The Ohio Academy of History is made up of amateur and professional historians from universities, colleges, high schools, elementary schools, and the general public.  It issues awards for outstanding publication, teaching, service, dissertations, and public history.  It also monitors and comments on the dissemination of historical knowledge in Ohio's schools, colleges, and universities.  In the fall, members of the Academy gather for a social hour and dinner, followed by a panel presentation or speaker. The Academy holds its annual business meeting during the spring accompanied by scholarly sessions on topics of historical interest.
